What is Chan Buddhism?

Chan Buddhism is a school of Chinese Buddhism that emphasises direct, immediate attention over scriptural study or accumulated practice. It emerged in China between the 5th and 7th centuries CE and holds that clarity is not achieved gradually but recognised directly. Japanese Zen, Korean Seon, and Vietnamese Thiền all descend from this tradition.

What is the difference between Chan and Zen Buddhism?

Chan and Zen Buddhism are the same tradition in two languages. The character 禅 is read chán in Mandarin and zen in Japanese. When Chan crossed to Japan in the 7th century CE, the practice and lineages crossed intact. The difference is pronunciation and several centuries of separate development; the founding texts, methods, and root teachers are shared.

What is the Zen aesthetic?

The Zen aesthetic is a visual and material philosophy rooted in Chan Buddhist practice: restraint, asymmetry, the authority of empty space, and the deliberate value of what is left out. It appears in ink wash painting, garden design, architecture, and craft — anywhere a maker has asked what can be removed rather than what can be added.

How does Chan Buddhism relate to zen meditation?

Zen meditation — zazen in Japanese, zuòchán in Chinese — sits at the centre of Chan practice. The practitioner sits in stillness and observes the mind directly, without narrating or suppressing what arises. Chan extended this quality of attention beyond formal meditation into daily acts: how a room is arranged, how tea is prepared, how objects are made and carried.

Is Chan Buddhism a religion or a philosophy?

Chan is formally a school of Mahayana Buddhism and is practiced as a religion in monasteries across China and East Asia. Its influence on design, aesthetics, and daily life has extended well beyond religious practice — the principles it articulates about attention, restraint, and material presence are as relevant in a studio or a living room as in a monastery.
